Brushing and Combing Your Hair

When it comes to brushing and combing your hair, the old adage says one hundred brush strokes every night will make it healthy and shiny. While not everyone has the time for that, a little bit of nightly hair care is all you need for soft, silky locks.

Wash and towel dry hair

Begin by washing your hair with the proper shampoo for your hair type. Apply conditioner and leave it in for several minutes. Thoroughly rinse the conditioner from your hair and finish with a cool water rinse to give it extra shine. Wrap your hair in a towel for a few minutes to absorb some water. After that, blot water from your hair gently. Do not rub your hair vigorously, as this will damage the cuticle and make more tangles. Do not use a blow dryer or a curling iron or straightener, as these will also damage your hair.

Combing and de-tangling

Take a wide-toothed comb and begin carefully combing out the tangles. Start at the ends, combing through small sections at a time, moving up a couple inches at a time as the tangles come free. Let your de-tangled hair air dry prior to brushing. This takes longer than heat styling but blow drying can damage hair. Never use a brush on wet hair because this will cause breakage. Run your fingers through your hair occasionally to fluff it up for added body and to help it dry more quickly.

Final steps

Take your comb and divide your hair into three segments to help to give it some volume. Keep the segments separated. Take one of the segments and brush your hair beginning at the roots and moving outward to the ends. Repeat this process with each segment. After you are finished, put a hair tie around all the segments of hair. Go to bed and when you get up, take out the hair ties and your hair will look healthy and shiny.

Brushing and combing your hair the right way will leave your pretty tresses looking good and feeling soft. You will find that it is easy to do once you have learned the right methodology.
