Caring for Oily Hair

Do you suffer with oily hair that goes limp and flat at the roots just hours after you shampoo it? The hard truth is that the blame might lie with your hair care routine. Here are some easy tips to caring for oily hair.

The dry scalp culprit

Have you ever heard that washing your face with a drying cleanser can cause breakouts? The reason is that your skin reacts to its oils being stripped away by stepping up oil production; your scalp does the same. So even if you shampoo every day, consider shampooing just the body and ends of your hair three times a week, and leave the scalp alone. If you absolutely must shampoo from root to tip on a daily basis, try a baby shampoo or a shampoo for dry scalp instead of your everyday product.

Rinse, rinse, rinse

Soap build-up and residue can also contribute to your scalp's oil production, so be sure to rinse your hair well with cool or cold water before you finish your shower. If your hair is extremely oily, try a diluted lemon juice rinse; this cuts through the soap residue without triggering additional oil production, and it leaves your hair smelling great!

Put down the brush

As hard as it might seem, refrain from brushing your hair too often. Remember, anything that rubs or scratches the scalp can cause it to overproduce oil. Once your hair is styled, use a light hairspray to keep it in place -- then leave it alone as much as you can!

These simple steps help oily hair stay fresher longer, with more shine, bounce and inviting scent.
