Hair Coloring How-To

This hair color how-to teaches you the simple steps needed to make your tresses stand out. These days, coloring your hair is not difficult. Whether you want to cover up gray hairs or change your look entirely, do the job easily yourself.

  1. First: Select the right hair color for the job

Many brands and types of hair color are available, not to mention a wide variety of colors. First determine if you want temporary, semi-permanent or permanent hair color. Next, choose a brand and suitable color. If you are trying to cover gray hair, usually permanent hair color is recommended in a shade that is a bit lighter than your natural color.

  2. Second: Preparation

Read the instructions that come with the hair color kit. While the procedures for most are similar, processing time is sometimes different. Do the strand test to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction to the product and that you like the color. Once all these steps are completed, don the plastic gloves that come with the kit.

  3. Third: Mix and apply

Following the instructions, mix the chemicals and shake for the specified time period. Separate your hair into sections and clip each section to work on one section at a time. Apply the hair color to each section, starting with the hair closest to the roots and work your way down.

  4. Fourth: Arrange your hair and wait

Pile your hair on top of your head. If the kit includes a plastic cap, place the cap over your hair. Set your timer for the specified amount of time for the color to set. Now sit back, relax and wait for the magic to happen.

  5. Fifth: Rinse and condition

After leaving the hair color on your hair for the specified time, rinse your hair thoroughly. Then use the included deep conditioner and dry and style as usual.
